Should You Lead With The Product or With The Business?
Should you lead with the product or with the business? That is one of the most common questions that network marketers ask. And it is also probably one of the most controversial questions that network marketers ask.
There is a school of thought that says that you should lead with the product. There is another school of thought that says you should lead with your business. As it turns out, there are good reasons that are cited for doing it either way.
Should I Lead With The Business?
Those who adovocate leading with the business often times teach that you will make more money faster if you lead with the business. That method enables you to leverage your time.
One person by his self can only talk to to so many people during the course of the day. His results are limited by how many people he can have a conversation with by himself.
But if you have members on your team that can also be having conversations with potential customers, you can duplicate your efforts very easily. In addition, all of those team members will also be using the product, so your product sales will also multiply.
Or Should I Lead With The Product?
The other train of thought is that it is much easier to sell a product than it is to convince someone that they should start a business. Compared to convincing someone to invest in a business, it is much easier to convince someone to buy a $40 product. If the product doesn’t work for them, they can put it up on a shelf in their bathroom, forget about it, and go on with life.
But it is harder to convince someone to invest a couple hundred dollars into a business that they are going to have to run. Most people have not had any experience in owning a business, and the thought of having a business of their own could be entirely out of their comfort zone. After spending a couple hundred dollars on a business opportunity, it is hard to just put it on a shelf and just forget about it.
An additional point is that if a customer likes the product, they will keep buying it. That gives you a residual income. Also, some customers will like the product so well that they will consider selling it themselves. That makes for some of the best recruiting ever!
So should you lead with the product or with the business?
Perhaps That Is Not The Right Question To Ask!
Perhaps the question about whether you should lead with the product or with with the business is not the question you should be asking. Maybe that is not the right question!
When you have someone in front of you that you have just met, you will NOT know whether to lead with product or with the business. You do not know what their needs or wants are.
If you offer a vegetarian a big, juicy steak, he is not going to appreciate it much because he is a vegetarian. It really helps to know who you are talking to.
So the question about whether you should lead with the product or with the business comes down to the customer’s needs. And you won’t know what that is until you have had a conversation with them.
Find out what they need, and then you will know what direction to steer the conversation.
So What Would Should You Do?
There are some network marketers (and I fit into this group) that feel that we should offer our potential customers some value. We are not into it just to make a quick dollar here and there.
