Do You Have a Bad Upline in Your Network Marketing Business?
I recently was asked to do a video about bad upline as one of my readers was having some issues, struggles, and conflicts with her upline. In fact, in recent months, I have heard of a number of people who are having problems with their uplines.
All of you have an upline, whether you know it or not, unless you are one of those few who have been sponsored directly by your company. But most likely you do have an upline, even if you don’t know who they are.
I have put uplines in three different catogories. You might have a bad upline, meaning that you have an upline that you struggle with. There could be some conflicts or differences in opinion, or perhaps things are just not going smoothly between the two of you.
You could have a good upline. Your sponosr and upline might really care for you and really do want you to be successful with your business. They will help you and teach you and will have this “servant heart.” That type of upline will really have your best interests at heart.
And then there are those of you who aren’t even sure that you have an upline. Or if you do, you don’t know who they are. You have never met them or have never talked with them. To you, they are non-existent. Which means that you get no help or support from them whatsoever.
Here are my thoughts about uplines, particularly a bad upline. Just my opinions, so take from it what you will!
The bad upline
Back in the 80’s when network marketing was just kind of getting started, there were not a lot of network marketing companies. At least not as many as there are today. Today there are thousands of network marketing company. In the 80’s there were only a few.
Consequently, there weren’t nearly as many network marketers. And there weren’t very many people who were making a lot of money in their business. There just weren’t that many people doing network marketing in the the first place, so the numbers of successful marketers were even smaller.
Some of these people began to find success and to make some money. Sadly, some of those people did not handle success very well! They began to get an attitude that they were something special because they had found some success that others hadn’t.
They felt that they should be highly respected and even revered! Some of them thought that they should be looked upon as some sort of guru! A feeling of entitlement and desire for exhaltation began to grow.
Some of them began to believe that they OWNED their downline! They felt that they could dictate to their downline exactly what and what not to do with their business because of how successful they were in their own business.
It does need to be said that most successful network marketers weren’t like this and treated their downline well, but there were too many that did.
So that is what a bad upline looks like. They take their own personal success and abuse it.
A good upline
A good upline sincerely cares about their downline and sincerely wants to help their downline achieve success. They are willing to teach you, to mentor you, to work with you, and they are a great support to you. A good upline will give you the room to discover some things on your own. They will give you just the right amount of help, not too much, nor too little.
I hope that you have one of those good uplines!
Now there are some of you that are saying “I don’t even know what an upline is! I don’t even know if I have one!”
A “Ghost” Upline
I can tell you that unless you have been sponsored directly by your company, you do have an upline. Now maybe your upline is not working effectively. Or maybe your direct sponsor quit soon after they recruited you. Maybe even people several layers above them have quit.
But if you go high enough, eventually there is someone up there that is your upline. Unfortunately, they may be up there so high that they don’t even know you exist. So you are not getting any help from them.
So, in my mind, those are the three types of uplines.
If you have a good upline, celebrate that and be thankful! A good upline can be a trememdous help.
So…If You Have Either a Bad Upline or a “Non-existent” Upline, What Can You Do?
One of the things that you need to remember is that just because your upline has been very successful, and maybe they DO know how to run a business; they DO NOT own you or your business!
You are an independent contractor. You have freedoms, as long as those freedoms are within the bounds that you have signed off on with your company, to run your business in the way you see fit. As long as you are within the terms of compliance that your company required you to sign off on, you don’t have to do everything your upline asks of you.
Of course, if your upline is successful, they are going to desire that you do the things that worked for them. But you don’t have to! You can think for yourself.
You are a business person of your own. As long as your methods fall within your company’s terms of compliance, then you have the total right to build your business in the way that you see fit.
Now…..if you have struggles with your upline, and they are putting pressure on you to conform with their instructions, that is when it becomes tough. At that point, you will need to make some decisions about what you are going to do. It is not an easy situation to be in.
I am going to give you the same advice that I would give the person who “has no upline.”
When it comes right down to it, you don’t really need an upline! You can find the resources that you need to build your business almost everywhere. There are people who are willing to teach you. Online resources that you can plug into are everywhere on the internet.
You don’t have to have an upline to build a successful business. It’s nice….if you have it! And feel grateful if you do have that! But don’t let the fact that your upline is not supportive or that they don’t like the things that you are doing because you are going “outside the box”….don’t let that stop you! You have the right to build your business.
So Here is What I Am Going to Suggest to You
You should ALWAYS brand YOURSELF! Don’t brand the company that you are with, brand yourself.
Here is an example why:
One of the persons that I am familiar with was doing very well in their company. They were moving up through the ranks quickly. They were very active on social media, and they were posting a lot of quality content about them and their company on Facebook.
There began to be problems with their upline. And very quickly, it seemed, they were no longer with that company. They did find another company rather quickly.
Howver, here is the problem:
For a good period of time, they were putting up on the internet posts about their former company and how wonderful the products were. They had all this content invested and placed on the internet.
All of that content DOES NOT go away!
So here they are one day being with Company XYZ, and they are singing the praises of Company XYZ; and then the next day they are NOT with Company XYZ! Now they are with another company, and they are basically starting all over. So they begin putting up content about their new product and company.
The problem is that all of that old content about their former company is still up on the internet and still can be seen by anyone.
If people see that yesterday my friends were promoting one product and company and how it was the best, but now today they are promoting a different product and company, saying that they are the best….do you see the problem with credibility?
They have harmed themselves because they didn’t brand THEM. If they would have promoted themselves as someone who was an authority in their niche, someone who could bring in resources from a number of different sources and utilize them, their transition from their former company to their new company would have been seamless.
Your expertise and knowledge about health and wellness, for example, does not go away just because they have switched companies.
Their content on the internet while they were with their former company would have been valuable generic informaton about health and wellness. That content would have worked just as well with their new company. The content would still apply and it would not have been wasted. They could have just continued on, and when having been asked for advice and counsel about health and wellness, they could just recommend a different product.
It is a very seamless change. They wouldn’t have had to start all over.
You need to brand yourself, not your company!
So What Does This Have to Do With Upline?
If you don’t have an upline that supports you, you need to become a leader. You need to become your OWN leader! Become the leader that you wish you had. When you brand yourself, you become a leader.
Let’s face it. Things change all the time! You might indeed have the best product and company right now. But things change! Companies go out of business, products are discontinued.
If you are selling a product that makes up 80% of your business, and that product is discontinued or the formulation is changed so that people don’t want it any more, 80% of your business goes away.
So things can change. You can have problems with your upline. Or you may be with your particular company one day, but not the next day. You need to have some way to transition. Brand yourself so that you can make that transition easier.
Become the leader. Learn all you can about your particular niche, whether it be weight loss, health and wellness, travel, or whatever. Become an expert. When you are the expert, you can recommend whatever product makes sense. You are not stuck with just option. And it will all be very natural for your customer.
I hope that makes sense for you?
Brand yourself and not your company. I know your company wants you to brand them, and they have some good reasons for wanting that. It is good for them and their bottom line. You are essentially an advertizer for them. They want you to brand them.
But, for long-term success and security, it is better for you to brand yourself. To go out and search for resources to build your own business.
